Resources and Purpose

The Lake Superior NERR presently occupies two waterfront buildings on Barkers Island. The buildings were purchased with funds obtained through a grant from NOAA and are now part of the University of Wisconsin-Superior campus. The buildings will eventually house our Administrative Offices, a dock-side Laboratory, a Science and Interpretive Center (open to the public), and several classrooms.

Lake Superior NERR facilities are available to visiting educators, researchers and members of the public.

Dormitory space is available to visiting researchers for a nominal fee through the University of Wisconsin-Superior. Availability is limited. The University of Wisconsin-Superior campus is 1.5 mi from our Barkers Island facilities.

Lake Superior NERR owns and operates a 19 ft shallow draft, high capacity boat. Our boat and operator are available to visiting researchers and educators.

Water Quality Data Network

The Lake Superior NERR collects continuous water quality data at four sites (Oliver Bridge (real-time), Barkers Island (real-time), Blatnik Bridge, and Pokegama Bay) and operates a weather station in Pokegama Bay (real time). Real-time data is available from the above links. Archived data is available from our NERR Centralized Data Managmenet Office. In addition, we have results from other studies available. Please check our Research web pages or contact our staff for details.

Our Barker Island facility will eventually include a 1,300 sq. ft. dock-side laboratory. Laboratory space is available to visiting researchers.

Researchers have access to a secure dock immediately adjacent to our other facilities (offices and lab space).
